I've been a stay-at-home mom since the middle of December.  Aside from the earning money part, it's been the best time of my life.  I've been able to spend every day with my incredible daughter, Hadley.  While at times, a break would be nice, knowing that I start back to the working world in June is bittersweet.  My husband is going on summer vacation on May 4th, a month exactly after, I start my new job.  It would be so great if small people were allowed at work with you...

Purse Tutorial

I just remembered that I forgot to share the tutorial that I used for the purse that I made.

2 Hour or Less Purse

Enjoy!!

Craft Ideas

Being that I like to post crafty things as I come across them, here are some from the past few days:

1. "Hard Boiled" Jello Eggs

2. Bunny Sachets

3. Reindeer Inspired Treats For Kids

4. Knit Frog

Most, if not all of these, I will be attempting in the very near future...

Today, we said goodbye to a music legend.  Levon Helm, Drummer/Singer for the group "The Band" left our world today and the cancer that he had been fighting since the 90's.

"Just Another Whistle Stop"

[Intro:]
To all concerned dead or alive
The locomotive will arrive
Bringin' souls from all around,
They'll be bound for higher ground.
Look out, stranger, it's comin' through
With plenty of room for me and you.
And it's just another whistle stop
If you don't quit till we reach the top
I'd be much obliged to you

Odd man out,
You know that's the rule.
You can scream and you can shout,
But they'll only call you a crazy fool.
Pay no mind to what they say
When they're 'bitter they talk that way

I seen a young boy on the run
And I seen other children havin' fun.
A police siren flashing light,
I wonder who went down tonight.
People, people, where do you go
before you believe in what you know ?
It's just another whistle stop,
If you don't quit till we reach the top
I'd be much obliged to you.

When the trolley is clean out of reach,
A certain lesson it will teach.
To grind your ax until it's dull,
You've got to get it in your skull.
Tell the people all across the sea
Don't turn your back because it's free.
It's just another whistle stop,
If you don't quit till we reach the top
I'd, I'd be much obliged to you.

And it's odd man out,
You know that's the rule.
You can scream and you can shout,
But they'll only call you a crazy fool.
Pay no mind to what you read,
There's one way home that's guaranteed.

Came across this posting on Craigslist. Really made me stop and think...

adorable woman in my house - m4w (valley)

You're that adorable lady that lives in my house. I'm the guy you live with. We've been together for a few years and lately we've been missing a connection.

I don't know what happened. Our feelings have changed for each other and I think both of us want out. I used to wonder if we could get back to where we were but lately I just see that as a huge step back. We're not right for each other. We're good people, just not good together. Our lives are going to be old and stale before one of us has the courage to take that first step away from the other.

I feel trapped. I think you do too. What's worse is that we're used to feeling this way... people will tolerate the unimagineable when they're used to it. You're wonderful. I don't tell you that enough. In fact, there's a lot we don't tell the each other. I've become so calloused and resentful and yet I still remember how much I love and respect you. I don't know why I'm so afraid to let go, but sooner or later we're both going to forget the love and respect and all we'll remember is the pain and the anger.

I know what to do, but I'm afraid to do it... and I'm even more afraid that you'll do it. I don't know how to let you go but I know I have to before I waste all that brilliant light and life you're so full of. I'm sorry it got this far. I'm sorry for all the things I wasn't and all the things I am. I'm sorry I held on when I should have let go.

I'll see you tonight, I always do. What's it going to take for me to stop coming home?

It's really rather hard to believe that Hadley is 18 months old today.  You really don't realize just how quickly time passes until you become a parent.  Happy Half Birthday, My Dearest!

The experiment to make my own laundry detergent worked out rather well.  I may need to adjust it to add in some oxyclean, otherwise, it did get the desired effect for half the cost of store bought detergent.

DIY: Laundry Detergent (Liquid and Powder) and Fabric Softener

I've been toying with the idea lately to take on making my own laundry detergent.  I've found two recipes, one for liquid and one for powder that seem to be pretty good.  Also a super simple and cheap recipe for fabric softener!

1.  Fabric Softener:

Ingredients:
  • 1 Gallon White Distilled Vinegar
  • Optional: 25 -30 drops of Essential Oil for fragrance
Directions:
Fill a Downy Ball as you regularly would or add 1/4 cup to the rinse cycle. If you like your clothes to have a lingering fragrance like traditional fabric softener, add essential oil to the gallon of vinegar. Be sure to mark your jug so you don’t accidentally grab it for another purpose.

2.  Powder Detergent

3.  Liquid Detergent

So today, since we were out of white bread, I decided to make a loaf from scratch.  I've made rolls before without issue, but never before a whole loaf.  Much less two.

                                            Dough is almost done rising

I didn't have two loaf pans, therefore I had to improvise

End Product:  I successfully made 1 regular loaf and one that is somewhere between round and square

The following is an article that I found after I had been hearing about it via word of mouth last year.    It further solidifies my reasoning for not wanting my child to watch many things other than the Sprout Channel or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  My husband and my father think that I'm retarded for thinking this way, and I know that when she is with them and I am not, she watches things that I would certainly disprove of:

September 12, 2011 — Young children who watch fast-paced, fantastical television shows may become handicapped in their readiness for learning, according to a new University of Virginia study published in the October issue of the journal Pediatrics.

U.Va. psychologists tested 4-year-old children immediately after they had watched nine minutes of the popular show "SpongeBob SquarePants" and found that their executive function – the ability to pay attention, solve problems and moderate behavior – had been severely compromised when compared to 4-year-olds who had either watched nine minutes of "Caillou," a slower-paced, realistic public television show, or had spent nine minutes drawing.

"There was little difference on the tests between the drawing group and the group that watched 'Caillou,'" said lead investigator Angeline Lillard, a psychology professor in U.Va.'s College of Arts & Sciences.

Lillard said there may be two reasons that a fast-paced and fantastical show would have a negative effect on the learning and behavior of young children.

"It is possible that the fast pacing, where characters are constantly in motion from one thing to the next, and extreme fantasy, where the characters do things that make no sense in the real world, may disrupt the child's ability to concentrate immediately afterward," she said. "Another possibility is that children identify with unfocused and frenetic characters, and then adopt their characteristics."

The children in the study, whether they watched the television shows or drew, were tested immediately afterward for how well they solved problems and followed rules, remembered what they had been told, and were able to delay gratification.

Lillard advises parents to consider the findings when making decisions as to which television shows to allow their young children to watch – if they watch television at all.

"Parents should know that children who have just watched 'SpongeBob Squarepants,' or shows like it, might become compromised in their ability to learn and behave with self-control," she said.

Lillard and her co-author, graduate student Jennifer Peterson, said that 4-year-olds are in an important development stage of their lives and that what they watch on television may have lasting effects on their lifelong learning and behaviors. Their study, however, focused on the immediate effects.

"Young children are beginning to learn how to behave as well as how to learn," Lillard said. "At school, they have to behave properly, they need to sit at a table and eat properly, they need to be respectful, and all of that requires executive functions. If a child has just watched a television show that has handicapped these abilities, we cannot expect the child to behave at their normal level in everyday situations."

She recommends that parents use creative learning activities, such as drawing, using building blocks and board games, and playing outdoors to help their children develop sound behaviors and learning skills.

"Executive function is extremely important to children's success in school and in everyday life," Lillard said. "It's important to their psychological and physical well-being."

Things I Make

Sock bunny that was made from 1 pair of socks, 2 buttons, stuffing and some embroidery thread.

I love to re-purpose things.  The latest has been her old bumper that I turned into a quilt.  Turned out rather well for a first attempt :)
The one day of the year that I let my child have candy at 8:30 in the morning.  It was her first Easter Basket, I couldn't resist.
In the spirit of the very colorful holiday, I decided to make some special "Lavender" pancakes.  I love that they make the neon colors.  I'm not really sure how I just found out about these but they are amazing!!
My beautiful angel with her juice box buddy.  She was getting pretty antsy waiting on us to get ready to go to my grandmother's for Easter "Dinner" (lunch to everyone not from the south) and thankfully she didn't spill any juice on herself as she has a habit of doing :)
It's hard to tell in this photo but after taking down her pigtails, her hair kind of resembled two floppy dog's ears.  She's not so photogenic when people want to pose with her, so this is kind of a rare shot.

The beginning of the day went well, mostly.  Hadley was getting cranky towards the late part of the afternoon.  About 3a.m. she caught a bug and was up getting sick until almost 6 a.m.  However, after going back to sleep, she was perfectly normal when she woke up.  Unfortunately, a day later, the same bug hit Branden and myself.  Thankfully the virus didn't last long, but it definitely decided to be an unwelcome visitor.
